This image is a copy of the article, "Wirephoto Shows Lead: "Times" Keeps in Forefront. Recalls Pioneering in Picture Transmission Over Wire Systems." Los Angeles Times, 6 Jan. 1935: 26.
Portions of the article have been cropped, with artist illustrations and captions remaining.
One of several related photographs housed in this negative sleeve that document the process of phototelegraphy -the process of transmitting photographic images over telephone wire. Though there were advancements - namely the Telediagraph, the Belinograph, and the Telephotograver (invented by Los Angeles Times managing editor Ralph Trueblood) – the technology left much room for improvement. In the 1930s, the Associated Press began working with Kodak to perfect the technology. On January 1, 1935, the AP sent the first photograph out over its Wirephoto service to 47 affiliated newspapers across the United States.
Text from negative sleeve: 1150. Box 1. Associated Press Wirephoto. [Stamped:] Jul 18 1935.
Text from newspaper caption: Artist's Drawings Show How Wirephotos Reach "The Times" Over 10,000-Mile Network. The four-foot receiving machine, showing cylinder in which negative of the transmitted picture is contained, is depicted above, by Times Staff Artist Charles Owens, in contrast to the telephotograver first used by The Times to transmit pictures in 1922. The compact receiving machine of the new Wirephoto depicts the obvious improvement over the cumbersome early model, also shown by the artist's drawing. Also included in the drawings is the depiction of the switchboard used in controlling the 10,000 miles of wires utilized in transmittings news pictures to the office of the Times. The artist also has linked up the twenty-four cities represented in the service, extending from the west to east coasts and into southern areas. With this highly efficient equipment a news picture can be transmitted across the continent by Wirephoto in ten minutes.
