Photograph of President Herbert Hoover and his wife Lou Henry Hoover a the platform on the back of a train car in El Monte. Mrs. Hoover holds a lion cub that someone offered to her as a pet. She gave it back before departing.
Text from newspaper caption for a similar photo taken on the same occasion : "First Lady Turns Down Lion Cub As a Pet. A cub lion was presented to Mrs. Herbert Hoover, wife of the president, when they boarded a train at El Monte, Calif., after a visit in southern California. Mrs. Hoover held the lion until time for the train to start on the trip back home to Washington, then she handed the pet back to its original owner. No lion for the White House," Milwaukee Sentinel, 16 Nov. 1932: 18.
