Photograph taken during William Lewis Sachtleben's stay in Athens before embarking on a bicycle journey across Asia with Thomas Gaskell Allen Jr. View of the wall of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus from the outside. A bicycle is parked in the center (probably William Sachtleben's bicycle) near three unidentified men. Text from negative sleeve: No. 30. Feb. 26, 1891. The ruins of the theater of Herodes Atticus, a royal patron of Athens. This ruin is popularly known as the Odeion. It seated 3000 spectators and dates from the Roman times.
