Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Camarillo State Hospital in front of a mountain range. The large hospital was built to treat patients with mental illnesses. The construction was a Public Works Administration (PWA) project. It was later used as the California State University Channel Islands campus. This photograph appears with the article, "Camarillo Valley Boasts of Vast New Institution: Huge New Red-Tiled "City" Rises for $6,000,000 Mental Hospital," Los Angeles Times, 26 Feb. 1936: 6 Text from negative sleeve: 3686- / [stamped] Feb 14 1936 / New Cammarillo statechospital for mental cases under construction near Oxnard, / 2/7/36 Text from newspaper caption: Here is a view of the new $6,000,000 State mental hospital going up at Camarillo. This is the first unit, which will house 1250 men patients from other overcrowded institutions. The red-tiled buildings are forming a real "new city."
