Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A series of evidence is pointing to 76-year-old Joe Gabriele attempting to bomb the home of Frank Aloi over a monetary dispute. Authorities speculate that the bomb would have been powerful enough to have killed Aloi, his wife, and their eight children. Neighbours and Steele stand on either side of Gabriele, holding wire and large pieces of what looks like cement. Photograph appears with the article, "Elderly Man With Bomb Held In Police Inquiry," Los Angeles Times, 23 Feb 1936: 6. Text from newspaper caption: Deputy Sheriff Neighbors, left, and Chief of Police Steele of Bell, right, are questioning Joe Gabriele about the home-made bomb reported found in his possession when he was arrested near the home of Frank Aloi, Bell market operator, early yesterday. Gabriele maintains he found the bomb. Text from negative sleeve: 3799 Joe Gabriele (old man w/bomb on him) J. W. Neighbors (dep Sheriff) Willard Steele (chief of police - Bell) Feb 28, 1936 Handwritten on negative: J.W. Neighbors - Dep. sheriff Willard Steele chief of Police of Bell Joe Gabriele
