Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph appears with the article, "Cat and Bird in Prison Form Odd Attachment," Los Angeles Times, 05 Mar. 1936: A1. Cat lies patiently still and allows his bird companion to perch atop his head. Two convicted murderers of Folsom State Prison rescued a baby linnet and a newborn kitten from hunger and malnutrition and nursed them back to health. The cat and bird live in the prison's print shop in complete harmony. Text from newspaper caption: Here's the first moment of suspense- why hasn't there been a murder, why is the linnet still alive? The nerve of him sitting on his hereditary enemy's head! But their kind-hearted murderer-masters have taught them to love each other. Handwritten on negative: From: Warden Court Smith Text from negative sleeve: 3877 - Cat and bird 3/5/36 [stamped:] Mar 6 1936
