Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Five men are pictured, only James D. Key and William H. Spaulding are identified. One man holds a newspaper and is reading the front page while Key and Spaulding also are looking at the story. Key holds a flashlight to help light the newspaper. A Bullock's ad and crossword puzzle can be seen on the other pages. Key has a gun holstered on his hip. Spaulding has a cigarette in his mouth. Related to "U.C.L.A. Football Star Exposed as Impostor: Key Grid Hoax Ended as Evidence Proves 'Ted' is 'Shorty' and Definitely Ineligible," Los Angeles Times, 08 Nov 1935: 1. James D. Key, night watchman in Beverly Hills, was the father of Clois Francis "Shorty" Key, who pretended to be R. F. "Ted" Key (no relation) in order to play football for UCLA. James Key assisted in covering up his son's fraud. Bill Spaulding was the football coach for UCLA. Upon certainty that Clois F. Key was lying about who he was, he was expelled from UCLA. Text on that can be seen on newspaper front page: INVALID EXTRA HOAX Text from negative sleeve: 4164.
