Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Mrs. Grace W. Du Bois was jailed on suspicion of killing her 33-year-old son Dr. Charles N. Du Bois with a gunshot to the back of the head in the kitchen of his home. Mrs. Du Bois, who claims an intruder is responsible for the murder, was quoted with the confusing statement: "You say I might have done it. I don't believe I did, although I might have done it. I still think I am right in what I told you at first. I believe there was a young man there. Maybe there wasn't- but I believe there was." Mrs. Grace W. Du Bois sits hunched over, wrapped in a fur coat and black scarves as she clutches a napkin to her face. A smaller version of this photograph appears with the article, "Mother Mum On Slaying," Los Angeles Times, 25 Dec 1935: A2. Text from newspaper caption: Mrs. Grace DuBois, who, according to Capt. Wallis of homicide squad, alternately denied slaying her son, Dr. Charles DuBois, and said she "might have done it." Handwritten on negative: Grace Du Bois Text from negative sleeve: 4225 - Grace Du Bois Shot Son [stamped:] Dec 31 1935
