The children grin as they stare at the tiny decorated tree standing on a table surrounded by wrapped gifts of all sort and underneath the table are even more presents such as dolls and a train set. Photograph appears with the article, "Gifts Cheer Sad Family/Gifts Shower Family of Slain W.P.A. Father," Los Angeles Times, 25 Dec 1935: A1. Mrs. Ina Secrest and her four children were left without a husband and a father after Charles Layman went on a shooting spree at a construction site at La Brea and Exposition Boulevard - sympathetic people sent the family toys, flowers, food and more. Text from newspaper caption: Mrs. Ina Secrest, widowed when Charles M. Layman, W. P. A. worker, ran amuck with a gun a few days ago, surrounded by gifts which oured in from sympathetic friends and strangers to lighten burden of grief at Christmas-time. With her are her children, Juanita, Vontella, Raymond and Lois.
