An unidentified woman, one foot on a soapbox, stands before stacks of magazines at a demonstration at Los Angeles Plaza park. A sizable crowd is gathered and Pico House can be seen in the background on the left.
This photograph may be related to the article, “Dole Group May Parade,” Los Angeles Times, 24 Jan 1936: A1.
Members of a local union, Officers of the Public Works and Unemployed League, had planned a parade in protest of dole (government aid) reductions announced by the Los Angeles City Relief Administration but their permit was denied by City Council. In lieu of the parade, they held a rally at the Los Angeles Plaza where several speakers took the stand.
