Russian-born artisan Doris Cliff is traveling to countries such as Japan, China, Burma and Afghanistan to gather the jewels that she uses to make her wares. Doris uses a tool in each hand to work on a cuff with other tools and pieces of jewelry surrounding her. Photograph appears with the article, "Woman To Sail in Hunt for Gems," Los Angeles Times, 12 Mar 1936: A2. Text from newspaper caption: Mrs. Doris Cliff, woman jeweler, who works only with antique metals and gems, shown fashioning a filigree bracelet. She leaves this month to search the Orient for rare lapis lazuli.
