The area became a U.S. National Monument in 1936 and then Joshua Tree National Park in 1994.
Mertie West was H. H. West's second wife. Forrest Whitaker was her brother and Agnes was Forrest's wife.
Text from negative sleeve: 109. Whitewater-Morongo Valley, Calif. May 21, 1933. We camp for the night among the big rocks near Key Ranch. Forrest Whitaker with his Buick, Agnes Whitaker and Mertie West. 2 negatives.
