Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Mertie West and her family pose in front of a small waterfall along Lee Vining Creek on the Tioga Grade (probably the Tioga Pass Road, State Route 120). The waterfall runs down the rocks directly behind them. There are plants growing around it. Mertie West was H. H. West's wife. Forrest Whitaker was Mertie's brother and Agnes Whitaker was Forrest's wife. Abraham Whitaker was Forrest and Mertie's father. Romayne Shaw was Mertie and Forrest's nephew and Edith Shaw was his wife. Based on the date of the photograph, the little girl may be Shirleyana Shaw, rather than Eleanor Shaw. Both Shirleyana and Eleanor were Romayne Shaw's daughters. Text from negative sleeve: 144. Tioga grade near Mono Lake, Aug. 1929. See No. 143. About half way up the grade along Leevining [Lee Vining] creek is a small waterfall that comes down the side of the hill, and runs under the road. Splendid pure ice cold water. Every body stops here to get a drink and fill radiators. L to R: Forrest Whitaker, Agnes Whitaker, Mertie West, H. H. West Jr., Abraham Whitaker, Edith Shaw holding Eleanor Shaw, Romayne Shaw. Another negative with H. H. West taking Forrest Whitaker's place at the left. 2 negatives.
