Photograph of the original resting place (Old Tomb) of George Washington upon his death in 1799 at Mount Vernon. He and his family members were moved to a new vault on the property in 1831. A brick walkway leads to the wrought-iron gate surrounding the tomb. A short set of steps lead up to the right. Behind the gate, a mound-shaped tomb stands covered in ivy. An engraving above the door to the tomb reads, "WASHINGTON FAMILY."
