Photograph of Glen Velzy, Charles Stavnow, Cleo Swain and Chet Egdell in front of a shack at the camp at Grays Meadows at the start of their trip to Gardner Creek. Text from negative sleeve: 542. Gardner Creek trip about 1919. We packed in from Independence to Gardner creek via Bullfrog Lake and Charlotte Lake. Charles Stavnow, Cleo Swain, H. H. West, Glen Velzy. Packer was named Robinson. We went in over Kearsarge Pass. L to R: Glen Velzy, Charles Stavnow, Cleo Swain and Chet Egdell. Swain was employee of the Western Rubber & Supply Co. A half brother of Jesse Brown. Egdell was a garage owner at Independence who arranged he trip but at last minute was not able to get away. He had been in there before and promised us bear and deer, and golden trout. A very hard two day trip in. We drove our cars to Gray's Meadows where this picture was taken. Packed up to Heart Lakes that day and went to Gardne[r] the next day. Gray Meadows camp ground is situated along Independence Creek in the Onion Valley area of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains.
