Photograph, from left to right, of Rover (Guy West's dog) and H. H. West sitting in the tules near Watson Spur hunting for ducks. Rover sits at left behind H. H. West. H. H. West is viewed in profile as he sits among the tules with his gun at the ready. Both he and Rover face right. A dead duck lies on top of flattened down tules in front of H. H. West at center. A shadow of someone's head enters the photograph from the bottom edge.
Text from negative sleeve: 589. Watson Spur, Calif. 1895. We used to go down to Watson Spur, near the junction of the Long Beach and San Pedro lines of the S.P.R.R. on the Saturday night "Theatre Train" leaving the Arcade depot, Los Angeles, at 11 p.m. Get off at Watson Spur and go under the trestle, build a little fire to keep warm and wait for daybreak, when we would go across the right of way to a little lake called Watson Lake and shoot ducks. The conductor of the Long Beach train, Truax, got a permit from Mr Watson for myself and party to shoot on this lake. We got quite a few ducks. One night it commenced to rain hard and we went into an old shack on the Watson property that had part of a roof and no floor. We got soaked, and Asa Keys and his cousin Irving McMillan who was with us on that trip would not go out after ducks but took the morning train back to town. This is H.H.West and Guy West's dog Rover, sitting the tules.
