A photograph of a mudpot or mud pool at Volcano Springs (now Mundo) seen during an inspection trip for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The mud pool sits in the middle of the image within a crater. The crater containing the mud pool appears to sit within a larger crater. A plateau stretches into the distance towards mountains. Text from negative sleeve: 597. Volcano Springs, Calif. Southern Pacific inspection trip 1899. Two views of the mud volcanoes along side the S.P.R.R. tracks near Volcano Springs. They were mud volcanoes, bubbling all the time, hot water and steam, and a sickening gas.
