Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. H. H. West's cousin, William Mead, emerges from a cellar on the Mead's property. He wears overalls and a hat, and he has a moustache. There are two cats in front of him. There is an object which may be a wooden mallet on the ground at the right and there are trees in the background. Text from negative sleeve: 665. East. Red Oak, Iowa. Meads farm. September 1900. Will Mead coming up out of the cave that was a few feet from the south west corner of their house. Into this cave Uncle Dan used to run us in the night when a big storm came up. Was afraid of cyclones. We took comforts along with us and crawled into the bins for vegetables and slept. Smelled of dill pickle barrels, cabbages, old potatoes, onions, etc. Every once in a while Uncle Dan would go to the door, raise it, and peek out to see if the buildings were still there. How it thundered and lightninged. Grace and Walter Biddick picking a chicken, with help from Will Mead. 2 negatives.
