Photograph, from left to right, of Guy West, an unknown man (possibly Wayne West), George M. West and Frank Lemberger sitting outside their tent on a gold prospecting expedition in Monrovia. Guy sits on the ground, facing right and holding a gun. George M. West faces left as he stoops over a small fire pit in front of the tent. Frank Lemberger sits on a sawhorse and with pipe in his mouth as he looks to the camera. The group's tent stands behind them left-of-center. Gear litters the campsite and low hills rise in the distance.
Text from negative sleeve: 672. Monrovia, Calif. October 30, 1898. Sawpit canyon. Going over into the canyon from Monrovia, Guy West in the distance. George M.West wanted to test Sawpit canyon for gold. Went in with a miner's tent, with aid of Uncle Frank Lemberger who lived at Monrovia. We went over one Sunday to see him. L to R: Guy West with gun. Dont[sic] know the other boy by tent unless it is Wayne West. George M. West stooping over. Frank Lemberger on the saw horse, smoking. George M. West panning for gold.
