An underexposed photograph of Al Schmitz reclining at his hunting party's campsite in Hessian Meadows. He lies on his side in the near distance at left and looks towards the camera. Another member of the camping party appears to lie on their back atop a mattress(?) to the right of him. A horse, viewed from the back(?), stands between the two men. The foreground is strewn with camping gear. The meadow stretches behind them and gives way to low, treed hills in the background.
Text from negative sleeve: 678. Monache Meadows, Calif. 1914. Our camp at Hessian meadows. Poor negative. Al Schmitz is reclining at the right in one of the two of the camp. H.H.West with the first deer he ever killed. Shot with 28 gauge Ross Rifle. Head was mounted on reaching Los Angeles. Glen Velzy brought it in from Lone Pine on the train for mounting, as Al and I picked up our famil[sic] families and went to Silver Lake for a vacat[sic] vacation.
