Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. An underexposed photograph of H. H. West posing next to a pack horse carrying the first deer H. H. ever shot. H. H. West stands right-of-center with his hand on his hip and looking to the camera. The horse stands to his left, facing H. H., and is viewed from the side. The buck hangs slung over the horse's back towards the left. Trees stand in the background. Text from negative sleeve: 678. Monache Meadows, Calif. 1914. Our camp at Hessian meadows. Poor negative. Al Schmitz is reclining at the right in one of the two of the camp. H.H.West with the first deer he ever killed. Shot with 28 gauge Ross Rifle. Head was mounted on reaching Los Angeles. Glen Velzy brought it in from Lone Pine on the train for mounting, as Al and I picked up our famil[sic] families and went to Silver Lake for a vacat[sic] vacation.
