Photograph of soldiers standing aboard the deck of the S.S. George W. Elder cargo ship as it sits in dock at Pier 12 in San Francisco. The ship's starboard bow faces towards the camera at center. On the side of the ship it reads, "GEO. W. ELDER." Soldiers sit, stand and lean over the rails on the top deck of the ship. Ropes stretch from the ship towards the pier (out-of-frame) at left. Up on the ship and behind the soldiers, the ship's rigging is visible. At left, the pier expands into the background. On the pier and behind the ship, a building stands. Signage over the open doors reads, "UNITED STATES ARMY TRANSPORT SERVICE. PIER NO. 12 [unreadable text]." To the right of the S.S. George W. Elder, another ship is docked. Between the other ship and the Elder, a few boats sit in the water perpendicularly to both ships.
