Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of USAT Sherman (partial view) docked and receiving a fresh coat of paint along its port bow. The camera looks up to it from the pier. Workers sit on suspended scaffolding in sets of two across the port side of the ship. They appear to be painting the ship. A large anchor hangs down from the side of the ship at left and further right, workers paint lettering onto the ship which reads, "U.S. [...] TRANSPORT. SH[E]RMAN." The ship extends from the left and back to the right. At right and on the ship's deck, a couple masts and rigging are visible. A few ropes drape down from the top deck at left and extend down towards the lower right corner and onto the pier. The pier extends across the foreground. A man stands with his back to the camera at left. He rests his left hand onto a post as he looks towards the ship. Another man stands further back and at right. He holds onto the ship's ropes. A building stands along the right edge of the frame. An American flag stands above it. Text from negative sleeve: 916. San Francisco 1898. Waterfront. Transports for Manila at the docks.
