Description

Photograph, from left to right, of Nella West and Mertie Whitaker sitting and posing at the base of a signal tower on the summit of Mount Tamalpais. Nella and Mertie sit center and smile to the camera. Mertie sits front and center in front of the base of the signal tower while Nella sits slightly behind her and to the left of the signal tower. Other visitors to the summit of Mount Tamalpais stand and sit to the left of them. The tower stands atop a small rocky peak and extends out-of-frame, right-of-center. Three cables extend down from it; one each to the right and left and another at center, towards the camera and to the right of Mertie. A slotted platform on the tower hangs over Mertie and Nella. The tower stretches upward with a few climbing rungs visible. At right, a wood-enclosed sluice extends from the tower down the side of the mountain. Text from negative sleeve: 972. Mt Tamalpais.
