Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Wilfrid Cline, Jr. standing outside the establishment in Montgomery Creek where he, H. H. West and Harry Schmitz stopped for lunch. Wilfrid Cline stands in the near distance, at right. He looks to the camera with his arms crossed in front of him. A dirt drive stretches across the image in front of him. To his left, a car is parked. It is viewed at an angle from the side and rear; it faces left. A deer hide hangs from the rear of the vehicle. Behind Wilfrid and the car, a fence spans across the image. A gate stands open behind and to the left of Wilfrid. Behind the fence, a two-story building stands at right. A rail runs around the perimeter of the second story. A sign hanging from the corner of an eave on the second story reads, "[???] HOTEL." In the distance at left, snow appears to cover the ground and trees stand in the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1024. Trinity County trip, 1917. We stop at Montgomery Creek, between Redding and Burney for lunch. There was a car out in front with a big deer hide on rear. Fellow said he was over in Modoc County near Medicine Lake to get it. Said lots of deer over there. In the hall of this building was hanging the largest hornet next I ever saw. pear shaped and about 2 feet long. Charged Harry Schmitz and I 75¢ each for a whale of a lunch but let Wilfrid Cline Jr off with 50¢ saying he was under age, whereas Wilf really ate as much as Harry and I did together. This building has since been burned down. 1 film
