Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of a sheep herder, who was traveling with H. H. West's party, holds a pan to show the camera biscuits he made in camp near Kosk Creek. The sheep herder stands left-of-center and takes a wide leg stance as he leans over slightly. He looks to camera as he holds a pan down in front of him with biscuits sitting inside. In front of him, ashes from a campfire smolder. A couple of pots sit around it. More dining implements sit on a blanket in the background at right. Trees surround the campsite and extend into the distance. Text from negative sleeve: 1040. Trinity County trip, 1917. Kosk Creek-Cayton Valley. 1. The sheep herder we had with us took my dutch oven and made a batch of real camp biscuits. I took 4 small pictures showing him making the dough, cooking in the Dutch oven over a bed of coals and when done showing them to us. Done a beautiful golden brown, and delicious with molasses. 2. Wilfrid Cline Jr getting a pail of water at the spring. It was called Poison Spring, but the water was excellent. 3. Large film. We are all packed to leave Cayton for home. Left to right Harry Schmitz, John Bidwell, Wilfrid xx Cline Jr. I have a five gal oil can hung on rear. We have been using it to wash clothes. 1 large, 5 small films
