Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph looking out a train car window overlooking the Sacramento River as the train travels along the canyon alongside it. A train's passenger car window ledge extends up along the left edge of the image. A boy sits in the window ledge in the next compartment forward. His back is to camera as he legs and upper body appear to hand over the side of the train. The train travels along a curve that follows the path of the Sacramento River. The train reenters the frame at left near the kid. It is off in the distance and curves towards the middle of the image. Smoke rises from the engine car in the distance at center. The Sacramento River flows at right alongside the train. At center, a tree-covered mountain rises from the canyon. Trees stand to the right of the Sacramento River. Text from negative sleeve: 1063. Shasta Co. About 1903. 1. Shasta springs shooting from ground. 2. Shasta spring. We got off at the springs and after the train had left the station, the spring was shut off. Apparently only a pipe outlet in the ground controlled by a valve. Fooled the passengers. 3. Our train in the Sacramento canyon. 4. An old mine mill near Shasta Springs. 4 films
