West sits nearest the camera at center. She is sitting on the ground, facing right, but turns her head to look to the camera as she rests a hand down to the ground behind her. Pieces of fabric lie about the patch of grassy ground that surrounds Mary. Behind her, a few pots and pans sit on the ground. Further behind her at right, Kate A. Schmitz appears to be washing a pot while Chester Schmitz sits in front of her. A sliver of a stream is visible along the right edge of the frame. Behind Mary and to the left, the camp stove stands; it is viewed from the side. A tent (partial view) and a pile of branches sit even further behind Mary on the left.
