Mary A. West (Mary Adelbert Teel West Shepard) was H. H. West's first wife and the mother of his children.
Mary West and Bessie Velzy sit on a fountain across the street from Mission San Fernando Rey de España. Both women wear hats and hold bags in their hands. Mrs. Velzy has a black bow on her shirt. The fountain is crumbling at various points. The mission has a Spanish tiled roof. There is a tree at the right.
Though the negative sleeve identifies this as San Juan Capistrano, it instead appears to be Mission San Fernando, Rey de Espana.
Text from negative sleeve: 1136. Velzy West tour 1909. San Juan Capistrano, Calif. 1. L to R: Mrs Mary A West. Mrs Bessie Velzy. 2. Group of 4, apparently some visitors there who wanted a picture and I took them, sending copy to them later. Bess Velzy is third from left. Mrs West not in it. Maybe she took the picture. 2 films.
