According to the negative sleeve for this set, these photographs are of the San Diego Fair, about 1912. The Sacramento Valley Building, viewed here was not built until 1915. It is likely that this image was taken around 1915. In 1915 and through 1916, San Diego hosted the Panama-California Exposition, for which many of the buildings in the photographs were built. The photographs most likely document this event.
Photograph, from front to back, of Elizabeth West and Frances West feeding pigeons in the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park. Elizabeth West crouches down in the foreground, right-of-center. She faces left and holds out a hand towards several pigeons on the ground to the left. Behind her and the pigeons, Frances West also crouches down in the plaza. She faces left and turns her head slightly towards a bird in the near distance. A few pigeons walk on the ground behind Elizabeth and to the right of Frances. In the background, the Sacramento Valley Building (demolished in the 1920's) stands. Steps lead up to its facade at left and center. A striped awning hangs over the entry at left. Ornate columns flank its arcade. A group of people approach the building from the right. Trees line stand in front of the right side of the building.
