According to the negative sleeve for this set, these photographs are of the San Diego Fair, about 1912. The Home Economy Building, viewed here was not built until 1915. It is likely that this image was taken around 1915. In 1915 and through 1916, San Diego hosted the Panama-California Exposition, for which many of the buildings in this set of photographs were built. The photographs most likely document this event.
Photograph, from left to right, of Frances Cline, Chester Schmitz, Kate A. Schmitz, Irene Schmitz and Frances West riding on an Osborn Electriquette through the Plaza de Panama near the Home Economy Building in Balboa Park. The group sits in and on the motorized passenger conveyance in the middle of the Plaza. The wicker electriquette is viewed at an angle from the side and faces right. Sitting across the seat at the back of the vehicle are: Frances Cline, Chester Schmitz and Kate Schmitz. Frances sits nearest to camera and looks back to the right. Chester stands from his seat and looks to the camera. Kate Schmitz sits behind him with her gaze cast downwards. At right, Irene Schmitz and Frances West sit atop the front end of the conveyance. Irene is nearest to camera and looks to the camera. Behind her, Frances sits and turns to look back towards Chester. A man wearing a sombrero stands at the far side of the electriquette near Kate Schmitz. At right, the plaza stretches into the distance towards the Home Economy Building. Its tower stands in partial view at right and the building extends towards the left. Trees stand in the background at left.
