Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. According to the accompanying negative sleeve, the power plant was visited by the West, Schmitz and Lemberger party around 1912. The plant that stands in the images was not completed until 1917. It is more likely these images were taken around 1917 or later. Photograph of John Lemberger and other members of the West and Schmitz families leaving the Los Angeles Bureau of Power and Light's Power Plant No. 1 in San Francisquito Canyon after a visit. A wide dirt road extends across the bottom edge of the frame and narrows towards the center as it approaches the power plant in the distance. John Lemberger walks down the road, left-of-center, towards the camera. He holds a book in his hand as he waves his arm upward. To his left, Albert Schmitz and Christina Schmitz stand to the side of the road near a car parked in partial view at left. Behind and to the right of John Lemberger, 3 more members of the party walk down the road towards the camera. They are: Freda Schmitz, Mary Schmitz and Ray Schmitz; they stand in a row. Behind them, Power Plant No. 1 stands. It is viewed at an angle. To the right of the road, a hillside extends upward in the foreground. Beyond the power plant, low mountains rise in the distance. Penstocks extend down the mountainside in the distance at far right. Text from negative sleeve: 1177. San Francisquito Canyon, about 1912. L to R: Mrs A.B.Schmitz.
