Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. According to the accompanying negative sleeve, the power plant was visited by the West, Schmitz and Lemberger party around 1912. The plant that stands in the images was not completed until 1917. It is more likely these images were taken around 1917 or later. Additionally, Chester Schmitz was born in 1910, which would make him about 2 years old in this photograph; he looks considerably older than that here. Photograph, from left to right, of Elizabeth West, John Lemberger, Chester Schmitz and Frances West checking out Power Plant No. 1 in San Francisquito Canyon. They stand in a jagged row across a concrete platform. Elizabeth, John and Chester all have their backs to the camera; Frances stands off to the right and looks to the camera. A sliver of the power plant's pool juts into the image from the left just behind Elizabeth. A concrete retaining wall extends from the platform the group stands upon on an angle to the left behind Elizabeth and John. Power Plant No. 1 stands in the near distance at left and extends out of frame. Its short side faces a hillside that stands at right. The hillside rises behind the group on an upward angle from left to right. Low mountains peek over the power plant in the distance at center. Text from negative sleeve: 1178.
