Photograph of Frances Nichols sitting with a cat in her lap on the porch of her home at Nichols Ranch. Frances sits right-of-center on the low floor of the porch. She looks down towards her lap where she holds a cat. The cat sits up partially and looks to the camera. To the left of them, a scrapper with "Jack" written on it is affixed to a low post and a porch post that rises along the left edge of the image. Behind Frances, the porch floor stretches across the image. A door stands behind and to the left of Frances and a window is to the right of the door.
Text from negative sleeve: 1211. Santa Ana, California, about 1899. Nichols Ranch. 1. L to R: Charles Mertz. Kate Mertz. Frances Nichols and cat. 2. Frances Nichols in front of hammock. 3. Frances Nichols and cat. At her left is a scraper, and on it you can see written in chalk "Jack." Joe Delaney lived in Santa Barbara; met Fanny on a trip of hers to Santa Barbara. He worked for S.P.R.R. and so did I. He came to Los Angeles, staid all night with me and asked if I was engaged to Fanny. If not, he was going to Santa Ana next day and propose. He went down. Proposed. Was turned down. Wrote his name (he preferred to be called Jack) on the scraper and told Fannie she could wipe her feet on him. Over- 3 films.
