Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Josie Shaw was Mertie Whitaker's sister. William Shaw was Josie's husband, and Lester and Romayne Shaw were their sons. Abraham and Mary Whitaker were Mertie and Josie's parents. Agnes Hawley later became Forrest Whitaker's wife. Mertie Whitaker became H. H. West's second wife in the 1920's. The baby in the bonnet may be Josie Shaw's son, Romayne Shaw. Though the negative sleeve states that H. H. West is in the photograph, it instead appears to be William Shaw. Also, it is unclear whether the man furthest from the camera is either Forrest Whitaker or Harvey Hall. The back row of people are: Lelia Gillan, Josie Shaw, Mary Whitaker, Agnes Hawley, and either Forrest Whitaker or Harvey Hall. In the front row: Lester Shaw, Mertie Whitaker, Abraham Whitaker, William Shaw. Abraham, Mary, and Mertie Whitaker sit in the sand with William and Josie Shaw, as well as Lelia Gillan and Agnes Hawley. Lester Shaw wears a hat and looks down at the sand. Mertie Whitaker holds her hands at her knees and looks off to her right. West's tongue is sticking out. There are other people sitting behind them holding an umbrella. There is a building in the background with many windows. There are utility poles and wires overhead. A sign in the background reads, "surf bathing hot and cold salt water baths." Text from negative sleeve: 1238. Santa Monica, Calif. July 4, 1901. L to R: Lester Shaw in front, Leila Gillan in rear. Mertie Whitaker. Josie Shaw. H. H. West. A. Whitaker. Forrest Whitaker. 1 film.
