Description

Photograph of a handwritten sign on cloth stretched between 2 sticks standing in front of a tree at the Rubber Men's Picnic held in Santa Monica Canyon. The sign stands at center, it reads, "This is The House of Prestolite That Works By Day, goes Out At Night. iT starts You cussin give it a Rest. And work off your lights on Light Guy West." A tree stands directly behind the sign. It rises out of the ground at right and extends on an upward angle to the left and out-of-frame along the top edge. A man (partial view) sits in front of the tree and to the right of the sign along the right edge of the image. In the distance at left, a few men stand in a clearing, 2 of them are at a table. A cliff face rises behind them. Text from negative sleeve: 1240. Santa Monica Canyon about 1908. Rubber Men's picnic. 1. Joe Pike climbing the greased pole. 2. Jim Jeffries gets up at end of table and makes a one minute speech. 3. Prestolite ad for Guy M West. The Western Rubber and Supply Co. was agent for the Prestolite Company then. 4. Jim Jeffries is standing up at the right corner of the table. 5. L to R: McCabe (later Dodge Agt [sic] in San Diego, Calif.). F.O.Nelson, Agt Diamond Tires.
