Photograph, from left to right, of Keeper E. D. Hardy, Frank Mellus and John A. Hunter posing with their guns and strings of ducks in the wetlands at the Sunset Gun Club. The group stands left-of-center and all look to the camera. E. D. Hardy (partial view) stands along the left edge of the image. A string of ducks hang from his shoulder that extends beyond the frame. A stile stands on the ground to the right and behind him. On the top step of the stile, Frank Mellus stands. Strings of ducks hang draped over his upper body while he holds onto the barrel of rifle. To the right of Frank and the stile, John A. Hunter poses. He too is draped in strings of ducks and holds onto the barrel of a gun. Wire fencing stretches to the right from the stile, behind John Hunter and out-of-frame at right. Behind the group, marshlands extend into the distance.
Text from negative sleeve: 1274. Sunset Gun Club, December 16, 1916. 1. 2. Two films of same fellows: L to R: Keeper Hardy. Frank Mellus - on stile. John A. Hunter. Last I heard of Hardy he was farming down by San Diego, California. He tried to put a poacher off the club grounds one day and the poacher shot him with a 22 caliber rifle or pistol through the belly. He recovered however. John A. Hunter died in a duck blind at a duck club up near Bakersfield.
