Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Per the negative sleeve caption, this photograph was taken in 1910, the same year that Chester Schmitz was born. He looks considerably older than that, maybe about 5 or 6, in this photograph. The other children also look older than what their age would be in 1910. It is more likely that this image was taken around 1915. Photograph, from left to right, of Elizabeth West, Chester Schmitz, Frances West and Irene Schmitz sitting in a row on the sand in front of a beach umbrella. All four children look to the camera as they sit on the sand. Behind Chester and Frances, a beach umbrella is propped up on the sand with the top of it facing towards the camera. Beyond the umbrella, a couple of cars are parked on a roadway that stretches across the image. One is parked behind and to the left of the umbrella and the other is parked at far right. The bluffs of Santa Monica rise beyond the road and extend across the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1328. Venice, Calif. About 1910. Mildred Ave cottages. 1. L to R: Elizabeth West.
