Photograph of H. H. West standing on the edge of Watson Lake with his rifle and Guy West's dog during a duck hunt. H. H. West stands in the near distance, left-of-center. He faces towards the left and holds a rifle, which he points downward. The dog stands on the ground in front of him, also facing left. H. H. stands at the very edge of the small lake. Its near bank stretches across the image behind H. H. Reeds rise out of the water near and parallel to the edge. The lake stretches into the distance towards the right. The far banks are lined with tall grasses. A dark shadow passes across a large swath of the lower left corner, obscuring it.
Text from negative sleeve: 1335. Watson Spur, California, about 1895. The Southern Pacific Railroad line to Long Beach and San Pedro, diverges at Thenard Junction. Near Thenard is a trestle and a spur from the railroad, known as Watson's Spur. At least it was about 1895. There was a lot of little lakes here, surrounded with tules and cat tails, and Guy West, Irving McMillan, Asa Keys and myself used to go down on what was called the Theatre Special from Los Angeles about 11 p.m. each Saturday night, crawl under the trestle with a little fire to keep warm, eat out lunch for breakfast and hunt ducks till about 4 p.m. when the train up from Long Beach or San Pedro would pick us up. Conductor Truax of the Long Beach line knew Watson and got me a written permit to hunt on the lakes on his property, which had a barbed wire fence and No Shooting signs. We used to get quite a lot of ducks. H.H.West with Guy's dog at edge of Watson Lake. 1 film
