Photograph of the Hamilton tow car towing H. H. West's Buick from Willow Springs to Mojave. The cars travel along a dirt road that stretches on an upward angle from the lower right corner and out-of-frame at left. The Hamilton tow car sits further down the road in the near distance; it has broken down. It is viewed at an angle from the rear. Al Schmitz stands up in the back seat and Wilfrid Cline, Jr. sits up to the right of him. Both have their backs to the camera as they look towards the front of the car. A rope extends from the back end of the car and attaches to the front of H. H. West's Buick, which sits in the foreground at right. It is viewed at an angle from the side. Glen Velzy sits in the driver's seat with his back to the camera. A brush-covered landscape surrounds both sides of the road and sprawls across the background. Mountains are visible in the far distance at left.
Text from negative sleeve: 1337. Willow Springs, Calif. May 29, 1917. See envelope #1336. The garage at Willow Springs was run by the Hamiltons. They could not fix my car, and we arranged for them to tow us to Mojave. Out of Willow Springs about 3 miles the Hamilton tow car broke down. We had to get another car to tow us to Mojave. 1. Hamilton tow car broke down. Al Schmitz standing up in tow car watching the attempted repairs. Wilfrid Cline Jr at his right also looking on. Glen Velzy in my Buick at the wheel. 2.
