Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of an abandoned house on the outskirts of Yreka standing in the near distance. A dirt road passes across the foreground, elevating as it approaches the left. It is lined by a picket fence. Beyond the fence, the abandoned house stands, left-of-center. It is viewed at an angle from the front. The right side of the house stretches back and behind the house stands a shack. On the far side of the property, the picket fence reappears. Beyond it stands another home in the distance. Mountains are visible in the far distance. Text from negative sleeve: 1340. Yreka, California, 1898. One of father's old associates named Peter Vertrees, who came out from Illinois on the same covered wagon train as father did xxx died of consumption at Yreka and was buried in the cemetery just east of town. We went out to see if we could find the grave. Could not find it. Little late in the day but I took a photo of the cemetery. 1. Yreka cemetery east of town. 2. An abandoned house on the outskirts of town. A nice big house with all windows broken out, doors off and a wrack and ruin. 3. Father took my picture at the edge of Yreka. 3 films
