Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Mertie West standing alongside Morning Glory Pool in the Upper Geyser Basin while looking at a guidebook. Morning Glory Pool sits in the near distance at center. In front of it stands a signpost, which reads, "MORNING GLORY POOL THIS FAR-FAMED POOL HAS EASILY WON ITS NAME FORM THE SYMMETRY AND DEPTH OF ITS CRATER AND THE BLUE COLOR OF THE WATER. THIS BLUE IS THE NORMAL COLOR OF LARGE BODIES OF WATER. THE MORE BRILLIANT HUES TO BE FOUND IN SMALLER QUANTITIES ARE DUE TO A LOW FORM OF PLANT LIFE. WHILE THE FAME OF THIS IS GREAT, IT NEVERTHELESS IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE SURPASSED BY A NUMBER OF OTHER POOLS IN THE PARK, SOME OF WHICH ARE IN THIS GENERAL REGION." About 5 long, carved logs encircle the pool, end-to-end, providing seating for visitors. Mertie West stands, left-of-center, in the near distance to the left of the sign post and at the pool's edge. She stands in profile, facing right, as she looks at a guidebook she holds. Pines stand across the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1588. Yellowstone trip 1942. Tuesday, June 23, 1942. 1. 2. Two pictures of Mertie West at Morning Glory pool. 3. A group on the bridge leading from the road to the Excelsior Geyser basin. That is hot water flowing down the rock behind them. 4. Mertie West at Emerald Pool. Here is where a friend of ours broke thru and burned herself badly and was in the hospital for weeks. She was a member of Asbury Church. 4 films. [Note: In all instances of the year date, 1942, the last digit (2) is handwritten over a typed 3.]
