Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Mertie West sitting on the parapet of an observation deck overlooking Crater Lake while feeding a nuthatch and a chipmunk. The floor of the observation area stretches on an upward angle across the image from left to right. A stone parapet lines the back edge of the area. Mertie sits atop the low wall in the near distance, right-of-center. She sits with her legs swung towards the camera as she faces left and looks down towards the wall. Standing on the wall to her left are a nuthatch and a chipmunk. Mertie holds one hand out to feed them and holds a small bag in the other. Behind her, Crater Lake sits in the distance at left. It is surrounded by the crater rim, which encircles the lake, starting from behind Mertie at right and stretching behind the lake at left. The lake is viewed from the south rim, looking northeast. Snow is visible on some of the mountain peaks and surrounding landscape. Text from negative sleeve: 1611. Yellowstone trip 1942. Wednesday, July 1, 1942. 1.
