Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph looking northwest along North Broadway (formerly Downey Avenue) and towards Avenue 24 (formerly North Hellman Street). North Broadway stretches on a steep upward angle from right to left. Businesses line the right side of the street. The businesses, stretching back from right to left are: "Goodrich Silvertown Stor[e]," "P. PORTA IMPORTING CO.," "ITALIA[N] RESTAUR[ANT]," "NORTH BROADWAY DYE WORKS DRY CLEANERS," a "CABINET" business, "NORTH BROADWAY GARAGE," the 3-story Moore block, and two other buildings. Avenue 24 passes between the Goodrich Silvertown Store and P. Porta Importing Company. Cars are parked along the north side of North Broadway, facing west, and utility lines stretch above the street. Text from negative sleeve: 1689. Los Angeles, California. Downey Ave., East Los Angeles. Now North Broadway. Hellman St., East Los Angeles. Now Avenue 24. 1. A view of the corner of Downey Avenue and Hellman street taken in August 1936, showing at the corner the old Hanley block once Doc Schloss' drug store; the 3-story Moore block further down. We used to live in a house where the garage now is, when we came to Los Angeles in 1888. 2. A close up of the corner store. The Western Union had their branch office in this store for a while and here is where I worked, and learned to telegraph. Harry Fasig was clerk. 2 films August 1936
