Photograph of Mertie Whitaker sitting in a horse-drawn carriage while taking a trip to San Gabriel. A dirt road spans the width of the foreground and passes through the image on an upward angle from left to right. The carriage is stopped in the middle of the road at center. It is viewed from the rear and the side, facing back towards the right. Mertie Whitaker sits in the carriage seat with her back to the camera. Ahead of her at right, a horse is hitched to the front of the carriage and faces towards the back of the image. The surrounding countryside sprawls across the background.
