Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Nella A. West was H. H. West's sister. Pinkie Lemberger (Ellen Lorene Lemberger Warder) was their first cousin. Mertie Whitaker became H. H. West's second wife in the 1920's. This group appears in the same location and clothing in another image (image ark no. 21198/zz002hv24j), negative sleeve #1801, dated March 31, 1901. The date of this image has been changed accordingly. Edwin Emery, Nella West, Mertie Whitaker, and Ellen Lorene (Pinkie) Lemberger stand on the porch of 240 South Griffin Avenue. Mr. Emery leans on the porch railing. Ms. Whitaker and Ms. Lemberger look off to the left, while Ms. West stands on a lower step with her arms crossed in front of her and looks at the camera. A sign hanging from the porch reads, "architect and contractor." There are trees on either side of the porch and what may be a mailbox at the bottom of the steps. Text from negative sleeve: 1761. Los Angeles, Calif. 240 South Griffin Ave. About 1898. 1. Left to right: Mr Emery of Ottumwa, Ia. Nella West. Mertie Whitaker. Ella Loraine [sic] (Pinkie) Lemberger of Ottumwa, Iowa. 2.
