Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Dr. Bim Smith vaccinates Nella West while William Mead watches. Dr. Smith bends over Nella holding her arm, while Nella turns her head to look. William leans over to watch. Another man's hands and legs are visible at the right holding a piece of paper. On the table, there are papers, a glass bottle, a bowl, and a vase of flowers. There are other books and papers on the lower shelf. Dr. Smith rests his foot on the lower shelf. There is a fireplace in the background and another room is visible through the doorway. Nella A. West was H. H. West's sister. William P. Mead was their first cousin. Text from negative sleeve: 1777. Los Angeles, California. 240 South Griffin Ave., about 1900. 1. The actual vaccination of Nella A. West by Dr Bim Smith in our library. Will P. Mead is looking on. This film is badly scratched. 2. The vaccination film made such a hit that some weeks later when Dr Bim Smith and his mother were at the house, we made another set up similar to the actual, but used better dishes, and Mrs Smith looked on instead of Will Mead who was present at the actual vaccination. 2 films.
