Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Jose Miller holding a pipe over his shoulder at Camp Murray in Washington, while fellow servicemen Harold Brown, David Sparks and Herman Schultz look on. A gravel and dirt drive stretches through the image on an upward angle from the lower left corner and up to the right. Jose Miller stands nearest to the camera at left. He holds up a large pipe over his shoulder like a baseball and takes a wide stance with his feet. He faces slightly right. Behind him at left, Herman Schultz stands in the doorway of a canvas and wood slat constructed barracks. He faces towards the camera. Behind Jose at center, Harold Brown stands, facing towards camera, but looks down at a small book he holds open in his hands. Rightmost, David Sparks stands with his hands in his pockets and faces slightly left, towards Jose. A second, identical barracks stands in the background at right. Text from negative sleeve: 2011. H.H.West, Jr. films sent down from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, June 1943. Left to right: Herman Schultz. Jose Miller. Harold Brown. David Sparks. Taken by H.H.West [Jr.] at Camp Murray, Washington April 22, 1941, en route to Dutch Harbor. 1942
