Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of 4 fellow servicemen of H. H. West, Jr. standing in front of their quarters while stationed at Dutch Harbor during World War II. A walkway of wooden slats enters frame from the lower left corner and stretches through the image on an upward angle towards the right. It then extends back to the left towards the front door of the Quonset hut-style barracks. Four servicemen stand on the steps and walkway leading up to barrack's door. A man dressed in a heavy coat stands nearest to camera at center. He stands just in front of the front step and faces camera, but casts his gaze downwards. Behind him and to the left, a man in uniform stands on the front step and looks to the camera while raising his hand to his head. Leftmost, a man stands along the edge of the step while resting his foot on wooden post and looking to camera. Behind and to the right of him, a man reaches for the door of the barracks. The front of the barracks stands behind and to the left of the group. It is viewed at an angle from the front and faces right. Snow-covered mountains rise in the distance at right.
