Photograph of Mertie West walking up a gangplank to board a ship in Metlakatla, Alaska. The dock stretches across the foreground. Passengers waiting to board the ship stand in the near distance at left; most have their backs to the camera. At center, a gangplank on the dock stretches upwards to the right and towards a promenade deck of a ship. With her back to the camera, Mertie West walks up the gangplank and towards the ship. The ship stretches across the background on an angle, extending beyond the left and right frames. Passengers stand near the rail of the promenade deck and face towards the camera. A couple of lifeboats sit atop the upper deck.
